What is tooth whitening?
If you’ve been searching for a way to achieve a winning ‘red carpet’ smile, or would like a confident and beautiful smile for a special occasion, teeth whitening could be the perfect treatment for you. The whitening process works to bleach teeth that have become discoloured for a variety of reasons, including ageing, smoking, certain medications or stain-causing food or drinks. It is a completely safe and very effective treatment.
At Church Road Dental, we offer two types of teeth whitening treatment to ensure we can achieve the best possible results. Philips Zoom! in-surgery whitening takes just an hour in our comfortable practice to whiten your teeth up to eight shades lighter, protecting your tooth enamel from damage and ensuring incredible results. We also offer whitening kits that give you control of your treatment, enabling you to whiten your teeth in the comfort of your own home over 2-3 weeks. Your sparkling new smile is closer than you think!
What does whitening treatment involve?
Consultation
If you are interested in whitening your teeth, we firstly see you in our practice for a detailed consultation. We go through the treatment process, find out your ideal results and discuss whether in-surgery or at-home whitening will be the best option for you.
In-practice whitening
If you opt for whitening treatment in our practice, you are just 60 minutes away from your new whiter smile. We make sure you are feeling relaxed in the chair before we begin your treatment. We protect your gums using protective shields and apply special whitening gel onto your teeth. The gel is then activated using a bright light. After an hour, your teeth are beautifully brighter with stains removed. We give you a top-up kit and some personalised advice to help maintain your new smile.
At-home whitening
If you opt for at-home whitening treatment, we take digital scans and images of your teeth in order to make your custom whitening trays. When they are ready, we show you how to apply the whitening gel and insert these properly into your mouth. Your treatment then takes place at a time and place that suits you, either overnight while you sleep or for a shorter time during the day. After 2-3 weeks of daily treatment, your newly white and confident smile will be revealed! We give you some tailored advice and tips for maintaining your results at home.
Frequently asked questions
Teeth whitening treatment does not hurt. With at-home whitening, your trays are custom made and fit very comfortably, easily enabling you to whiten your teeth while you sleep. In-surgery whitening is also pain-free, using specialised gel and a bright light to change the colour of your smile.
Tooth whitening treatment is completely safe when carried out by a qualified dental professional. We use regulated products and supervise your whitening closely to make sure your teeth are not damaged in any way. You should avoid whitening kits that can easily be bought online or in beauty salons, as these could harm your tooth enamel.
Tooth whitening results can last anywhere from a few months to a couple of years, depending on your lifestyle and diet. Your teeth do have the potential to stay their newly white colour for the long term with regular and easy top-up treatments using your original whitening trays and new gel. You can also hold onto your whiter smile by visiting the hygienist regularly and trying to limit your consumption of teeth-staining foods and drinks.
Teeth whitening treatment is very effective on natural teeth and will whiten these evenly, removing stains and brightening your smile. However, if you have any dental restorations such as crowns, veneers or bridges, these will not change colour. If you need a dental restoration and are also considering whitening treatment, you may wish to whiten your teeth first, so your restoration can be made to match.
